Emley

The village of Emley dates from Anglo-Saxon times and lies on high ground. At the crossroads in the centre of the village you will see the remains of a market cross.

The striking landmark which dominates the area and can be seen across West Yorkshire is obviously Emley Moor Mast – currently accompanied by a temporary tower, while routine maintenance is undertaken.  It is 274 metres high, a Grade II listed structure and the main transmission site for Yorkshire.  It is also the UK highest free standing structure.

Emley village centres around a Post Office, supermarket and a hairdresser. The old Church Hall has been converted to a private residence. The Methodist church now houses the village playschool and the Emley Players, an amateur dramatics group.

Emley is home to AFC Emley football club.  The welfare ground also accommodates Emley Community Centre and the Wentworth sports club.  You will also find the last of the 8 previous village pubs, the White Horse and a working men’s club close to the TV transmitter at Emley Crossroads.

Thorncliffe Farm Shop offers a well stocked store, with fresh and dried goods, including butchers, bakers, freshly baked pies and pastries and other groceries.  They also have a delightful coffee shop with spectacular views and a very tempting and pleasing menu.

Emley Brass Band also have their concert and practise room in the centre of the village and where they hold their infamous Beer Festival.

The Emley Agricultural Show is an annual agricultural and horticultural event held on the first Saturday of August.
