Last week, I attended the launch of Ruddi’s Rockstars in Slaithwaite – an inspiring event introducing a new way for businesses to support families facing childhood cancer.
Although Ruddi’s Retreat has been featured on our directory since 2022, this felt like the perfect opportunity to learn more about the impact they have.
Each year, Ruddi’s Retreat supports more than 400 families by providing respite breaks and holidays – something many of us take for granted, but which can feel completely out of reach for families navigating cancer treatment.
With five fully equipped holiday caravans located in Filey and Blackpool, the charity offers a chance for families to step away from hospital environments and spend precious time together.
What is Ruddi’s Rockstars?
Ruddi’s Rockstars is a new initiative inviting businesses to formally support the charity.
By becoming a “Rockstar,” organisations can directly help fund these vital breaks – giving families time to reconnect, recharge and experience moments of normality during incredibly difficult periods.
Take a look at the perks and rewards for becoming a Ruddi’s Rockstar here.
It’s not just about financial support either. The scheme also builds a network of like-minded businesses who want to make a tangible difference in their communities.
A Launch Full of Energy and Community Spirit
The event itself was held at Ruddi’s charming café on Station Road – well worth a visit for its beautifully decorated ceiling alone – I felt like I had stepped into Neverland!
The room quickly filled with a mix of familiar and new faces, all brought together by a shared desire to support the charity.
One of the standout personalities of the day was Crazy Auntie Ann, whose infectious energy lit up the room and got us dancing, as she DJ’d. Originally gaining attention during lockdown by dancing in her dressing gown to motivate her students, becoming a TikTok sensation. She has since grown a huge social media following, learned to DJ and now performs across the world.
Also in attendance were a number of local business figures and supporters, highlighting just how strong the community backing for Ruddi’s Retreat has become.
Why This Matters
During the event, we heard powerful stories that brought home the reality for families supported by the charity.
For many, taking a holiday simply isn’t possible – between ongoing treatment, the need to stay close to major hospitals such as those in Leeds and Liverpool, and the emotional and financial strain involved.
These breaks aren’t luxuries—they are lifelines.
On a personal level, this resonated with me. When my daughter was born prematurely, we spent just a couple of weeks in a neonatal unit. Even that short time – surrounded by machines, constant noise and uncertainty -was overwhelming. It’s hard to imagine the ongoing reality for families dealing with childhood cancer.
Ruddi’s Retreat was founded by Ali, following her son Ruddi’s diagnosis, with the aim of helping other families facing similar challenges. That lived experience is at the heart of everything the charity does.
