Situated east of Wakefield[NW1] , Pontefract’s close-knit community and strong transport links make it popular with families and commuters. With varied culture, luscious green spaces, and history seamlessly preserved alongside modernity, this small market town has a big personality!
Pontefract’s Deep Roots:
Like many of West Yorkshire’s metropolitan boroughs, Pontefract boasts a rich history that’s shaped English life far beyond its borders.
Pontefract has retained much of its illustrious history for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike. Known as the ‘Key to the North’, the castle ruins offer a taste of the town’s political importance from the 11th century onwards. Archaeological exhibits, picturesque flora, and interactive audio-visual points deliver a multi-sensory experience. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of royalty around the Castle grounds or explore the dungeon’s grisly ties to infamous prisoners.
A Sweeter Side to Pontefract:
For Pontefract’s sweeter side, visitors can indulge in soft, chewy Pontefract Cakes. Hardly a cake at all, these liquorice discs are the hallmark of this historic town. Liquorice was brought to Britain by Crusaders or Cluniac monks returning from the Mediterranean between the 11th and 16th centuries. Originating around 1612, Pontefract Cakes are often stamped with an image of Pontefract Castle.
Continuing Pontefract’s sweet tradition is the HARIBO factory, offering patrons their version of Pontefract Cakes alongside other popular confectionary.
Related are the ruins of Pontefract Priory, likely where Cluniac monks lived after converting the Mediterranean— bags of liquorice in hand! Founded in 1090, Pontefract Priory is now a large greenery for picnics on the grassy slopes created by its buried foundations.
Pontefract also offers two museums with activities and exhibits suitable for all ages. Parents benefit from a wide range of affordable events across science, history, and the arts to expand the child’s mind, with sessions catering to special educational needs and disabilities.
Close Community:
While Pontefract is part of Wakefield’s wider metropolitan area, it is a small town with a big heart. It celebrates its unique culture and community spirit, while firmly in the 21st century.
One way in which Pontefract is reaching new heights is through the Work Rest or Play community.
Work Rest or Play helps businesses, charities, and community groups across West and South Yorkshire promote their services and activities. The directory covers everything from artisan markets[NW2] to property management experts[NW3] to support you through life’s biggest changes. These companies and organisations cover a broad range of areas where local people either work, rest, or play!
Visit the Work, Rest or Play[NW1] website to get your business, charity, or community group featured in the directory[NW2] . Advertise exciting product launches, upcoming events, and activities via the Virtual High Street[NW3] . Read news stories[NW4] from fellow locals united in caring for and contributing positively to their community. With their three-tier advertising packages, Work, Rest or Play is an affordable option for organisations big or small.
