Just a few miles south-west of Leeds city centre, Morley is a historic Yorkshire market town with a proud industrial heritage and a strong sense of community. From its roots in textile manufacturing and coal mining to its connections with famous cultural figures and popular annual events, Morley offers a blend of history, culture, and modern attractions. Whether you’re exploring its past or enjoying its lively atmosphere, Morley has plenty to offer.
Morley’s History

Morley is first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086; its name derived from “open ground by a moor”. Following Morley’s agrarian roots, the town became part of the Heavy Woollen District. Morley famously produced military garments from recycled cloth called shoddy for soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War (1861-1865).
In later centuries, Morley joined many other Yorkshire towns in mining coal, and like many other towns, experienced tragedy because of it. On the 7th of October 1872, 34 people were killed in an explosion at the Morley Main Colliery.
Morley’s varied history is symbolised in the town’s coat of arms, with features from its principal industries of textile manufacturing, coal mining and quarrying.
Morley’s Popular Culture
Morley presents fans of film and popular culture the unique opportunity to delve into the personal lives of beloved household names.
In 1933, a young Ernest Wiseman took to the stage as part of a singing duo with his father, under the name “Bert Carson and his Little Wonder”. In 1936, he won a major talent competition which kicked off his showbiz career in Morley. In January 1939, Wiseman made his London debut in the “Band Waggon” stage show at the Princes’ Theatre. Two months later, he appeared on Jack Hylton’s BBC Television show for the first time. Ernie Wise affirmed his legacy over the following decades, as one half of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. In March 2010, Wise’s widow Doreen unveiled a statue of him in Morley town centre.
Morley is the birthplace of Helen Fielding, whose family owned a cloth factory that produced jackets for miners’ donkeys. Fielding read English at St Anne’s College, Oxford— graduating in 1979— and subsequently worked as a producer for the BBC. In 1996, Fielding published Bridget Jones’ Diary, which soon became a global sensation on paper, and on the big screen in 2001.
