On the outskirts of Knottingley, The Wonkey Donkey Visitor’s Centre[NW2]  rescues and rehabilitates ill and mistreated donkeys, goats, and ponies. It was set up after the founder patiently cared for her first rescue, Buttons, at just ten years old. The sanctuary offers volunteering and the opportunity to adopt a donkey. After meeting all the donkeys, visitors can enjoy refreshments at the on-site café and ice cream parlour.

Knottingley Nature & Wildlife

Knottingley has several rewilding areas offering pleasant walks and a chance to spot various species of local wildlife. East of Knottingley town centre, Springfields is a rewilded field populated by rabbits, foxes, and native insects. Springfields is easily accessed via a small path off Common Lane.

Knottingley offers several riverside walks perfect for spending time in nature on sunny days. Starting at Willow Garth Nature Reserve, a small, wooded area in need of some community love but with great potential. Nearby, the River Aire snakes around the outskirts of Knottingley on its southern bank and expansive fields to the north. The River Aire and River Calder converge to create a casual riverside stroll around the edge of Knottingley.

After a long canal-side walk, pop into The Hidden Tearoom[NW3]  for delicious home-cooked meals and cakes. The Hidden Tearoom also offers Afternoon Tea experiences and creative workshops such as spring flower wreath making. Vouchers are available for their Afternoon Tea and food from their main menu, perfect gifts for new visitors!
