Local Community Event Achieves First-Page Google Visibility Without Paid Advertising

A recent review of our website analytics highlighted something that perfectly demonstrates the value of ensuring local events and community activities have an online presence.

While reviewing data from Google Search Console, we noticed that Work Rest or Play was appearing in Google search results for “Slaithwaite Duck Race 2026”. As we couldn’t recall an event listing being added to our local calendar, we investigated further.

What we discovered was that a PDF attachment, shared on the “Rural Newsletter April 2026 Colne Valley West“, relating to the duck race event had been uploaded to our website and used to create a supporting news article.

The results were impressive.

Over the last 28 days, the newsletter attachment and associated content appeared in Google Search results 1,468 times. During that period, 22 people actively chose to visit the content from Google Search, and it achieved an average search position of 7.8 – meaning it was typically appearing on the first page of Google search results.

What makes this particularly noteworthy is that this visibility was achieved without any paid advertising.

For a local community event, this demonstrates the power of having content published online in a format that search engines can find and index.

Many community groups work incredibly hard to organise events, fundraisers and activities, but often rely solely on social media to spread the word.

While social media has its place, content published on a website can continue to be discovered through Google searches long after a social media post has disappeared from people’s feeds.

In this case, a simple newsletter was transformed into online content that Google could understand, index and present to people actively searching for information about the event.

At Work Rest or Play, our local events calendar is free to use, making it easy for organisations to promote upcoming activities.

We also offer subsidised advertising packages for community organisations, funded through the support of our business advertisers. Our Community Bronze package is available free of charge.

If you’re involved with a local community group, charity, club, fundraiser or event, we’d love to show you what’s possible. Likewise, if you know an organisation that could benefit from greater online visibility, please point them in our direction.

This example shows that you don’t necessarily need a large marketing budget to be found online. Sometimes all it takes is having your content published in the right place, in a way that search engines can understand.

If you’d like to explore how your organisation could benefit from similar visibility, get in touch for a free, no-obligation chat. The website chat function connects directly to a real person – not a robot – and is often the quickest way to ask questions and discover what’s possible.
