Families Invited to “Roll into Fun” this summer

Wakefield Council is encouraging residents to make the most of the summer months by discovering a new way to enjoy the outdoors as the Friends of CHaT Parks launch a series of free family Crown Green Bowling sessions at Thornes Park.

The initiative, called “Roll into Fun – Family Fun on the Bowling Green”, aims to bring families, friends and local communities together through a fun, accessible and free outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The sessions are being led by the Friends of CHaT Parks, a dedicated charity and volunteer group that has worked tirelessly to protect and enhance these much-loved green spaces for more than 15 years. The group has played a leading role in helping to preserve the parks as thriving destinations for leisure, recreation and community activity for generations to come.

In recent years, the Friends group has expanded its role significantly, managing a wide range of facilities and activities including the popular “Game of Thornes” pay-and-play area, tennis courts, bowling facilities, pitch and putt, and much more.

Ian Deighton, Chair of the Friends of CHaT Parks, said: “Our parks are fantastic community assets and we want as many people as possible to enjoy them. Crown Green Bowling is a brilliant activity that people of all ages can take part in together. Whether you’ve never picked up a bowl before or you’re a seasoned player, these sessions are about having fun, meeting people and making great memories outdoors.”

The free sessions are designed to introduce more people to Crown Green Bowling while encouraging residents to make the most of Wakefield’s beautiful parks during the school holidays and throughout the summer season.

The programme is open to everyone, with a particular focus on families with children, older adults looking for a social and low-impact activity, local community groups such as Scouts and Guides, and anyone seeking a free outdoor activity close to home.

Participants can simply turn up and play, with equipment provided and friendly volunteers on hand to help beginners get started.

The initiative supports the Friends of CHaT Parks’ ongoing commitment to safeguarding and promoting Thornes Park as welcoming spaces for recreation, wellbeing and community connection.

Key benefits of the sessions include:

  • Free participation for all ages
  • Beginner-friendly coaching and support
  • Equipment provided
  • Opportunities to meet new people and get active outdoors
  • No booking required – just turn up and play

This summer, swap the screens for the greens and discover the fun of Crown Green Bowling. Gather the family, step onto the green and roll your way into a fantastic day out in the heart of Wakefield’s parks.
