Batley is a small market town on the northern outskirts of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Batley started out as several small medieval settlements, developing gradually with the rise of coal mining from the 1700s. Today, Batley is a multicultural, family-oriented community with great transport links to West Yorkshire’s larger towns and cities.

Family-Friendly Activities

The Little Town of Play [NW1] champions roleplay as an essential method of learning and development for young children. Batley’s Green Spaces and History

Hyrstlands Park sits on land originally belonging to Sir Mark Oldroyd, a MP and local mill owner. Sir Oldroyd built a large property on the land as his private residence, but this has since been separated from the park and repurposed as a commercial space. Hyrstlands Park is popular amongst visitors for its scenic charm; a space to run around or take a leisurely stroll.

Batley Memorial Park is located within the Batley Market Place conservation area. Built in 1923, it commemorates local infantrymen who fought and died in World War One and Two. The surrounding park offers unhindered views of Batley’s historic listed buildings and colourful foliage.

Sports and Leisure

The Mill Outlet & Garden Centre [NW3] is one of Batley’s main shopping outlets, spanning four floors of a converted historic mill. It is popular amongst visitors for its wide range of shops offering everything from stylish clothes to homeware. After shopping, visitors can relax at one of The Mill’s restaurants, praised for their quality and variety, including gluten-free options.

Like many of the surrounding Yorkshire towns, Batley has a long-standing and proud sporting history. Batley Bulldogs RLFC [NW4] was founded as a Rugby Union team in 1880. Despite highs and lows over the many seasons, the team has retained a dedicated fanbase. This Championship League rugby team play regular matches at their home base, the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium in Batley.

Padel & Co [NW5] has brought the world’s fastest-growing racket sport to Batley. Padel & Co’s community-led tournaments and relaxed post-match hangouts promote their energetic, inspiring social atmosphere— a space where all ages and abilities can connect through healthy competition.
