An exciting new chapter is about to begin at Cliffe House, as work gets underway on a brand-new adventure playground designed to inspire play, learning and family time for children across Kirklees.

Construction is set to begin on 9 March 2026, with the new playground expected to open in May 2026 (weather permitting). During this period, the existing adventure playground will be closed, but visitors can continue to enjoy the wider Cliffe House grounds and facilities as usual.
This investment represents a major step forward in enhancing Cliffe House as a welcoming, inclusive destination for both local families and visiting school groups.
A playground designed for everyone
The new adventure playground has been carefully planned with safety, accessibility and community use at its core. Once complete, it will provide:
A safe and modern place to play

The current facility will be replaced with up-to-date equipment that meets modern safety standards, giving children a high-quality environment to explore and have fun, and offering reassurance to parents and carers.
An inclusive space for all abilities
The design places strong emphasis on accessibility, ensuring children of all abilities—including those with disabilities—can play together. Sensory features will also be incorporated to support different ways of interacting with the environment.
A hub for families and the community

The playground will serve as a valued local asset, welcoming families from across Kirklees and beyond. It will provide a space where people can relax, connect and create lasting memories together.
Health and wellbeing benefits
Outdoor play is essential for children’s physical and emotional development. The new playground will encourage active play, imagination and confidence-building in a safe outdoor setting.
A long-term investment in Cliffe House
This project strengthens Cliffe House’s role as a key community resource, supporting its future as a destination for both residents and school residential visits.
Involving local children

Local young people are playing a special role in bringing the new playground to life. Pupils from Shepley First and Nursery School will take part in creative engagement activities, including designing a site banner featuring illustrations of native animals. These designs will be digitally reproduced and displayed at the playground.
In addition, visual materials and walkthroughs will help children see what the finished space will look like, building excitement and a sense of ownership. There are also plans to extend similar activities to school groups visiting Cliffe House on residential trips.
