A community organisation dedicated to reducing loneliness through handwritten letters has expanded its presence in Huddersfield town centre with the launch of a new letter drop-off point at Mail Boxes Etc.
Not-for-profit organisation Give…A Few Words CIC has installed a dedicated pillar box at Mail Boxes Etc on Queen Street, creating an additional accessible location for volunteers and supporters to post letters intended for people experiencing isolation or loneliness.
Founded during the first Covid-19 lockdown, the initiative began when founder Sharron Wilkinson partnered with a Huddersfield care home to help residents stay connected while separated from family and friends. The project later evolved into Give…A Few Words CIC, officially established in March 2021.
Today, volunteers from across the UK and overseas contribute handwritten letters, cards and creative messages designed to provide comfort, companionship and a sense of connection to recipients.
The organisation also depends on volunteers and fundraising support to continue delivering what it describes as the “gift of letters” to people who may benefit from regular correspondence.
Alongside the organisation’s main base at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, the new Queen Street pillar box provides a permanent high street drop-off point available during weekday opening hours.
Stephen Gorman, centre manager at Mail Boxes Etc Huddersfield, said the business was proud to support a project making a meaningful difference locally.
“Queen Street is a visible and convenient location, so it makes sense as a home for the pillar box so that volunteers can easily drop off letters,” he said.
“We are pleased to be able to help Give…A Few Words in a practical way and support the organisation’s work in the community.”
Sharron Wilkinson, founder of Give…A Few Words CIC, said the organisation was built around the power of simple acts of kindness.
“At the heart of Give…A Few Words is a simple idea; that a kind letter can make someone feel remembered, valued and less alone,” she said.
“Mail Boxes Etc is a natural location for the pillar box. Not only is Stephen a brilliant ambassador for the project, with his friendly can-do attitude and wonderfully positive personality, but it also makes it easy for people to support us, whether they are long-time volunteers or are discovering the project for the first time.”
