Meltham Day-Trips

Visitors can explore Meltham’s history through various daytime activities across the village.

Launched in September 2016, The Meltham Blue Plaque Trail is a free, self-guided tour of the village’s eclectic past. Beginning at Meltham Town Hall, the trail passes by several notable buildings including the 17th century Church of St. Bartholomew, the now-derelict Durker Roods – the home of industrialist Sir David Brown – and The Carlile Institute, a community owned venue housing the local Post Office, library, town council, and School of Dance.

David Brown Tractor Club is a museum preserving Meltham’s history as the headquarters for David Brown Tractors from 1939 until 1988. The museum showcases a collection of tractors, machinery, memorabilia, and archive material from Meltham’s agricultural past. The museum also welcomes well-behaved dogs, making it ideal for a family-friendly day trip.

Meltham’s Great Outdoors

Built off the back of its rural surroundings and agricultural foundations, Meltham offers a wide range of outdoor activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

The Meltham Greenway is a flat linear route along a disused railway line. Situated at the heart of the village, Meltham Greenway is an accessible tree-lined green space punctuated by infrastructure from its industrial past and Folly Dolly waterfall.

The hills southwest of Meltham are popular for hiking and other outdoor activities. Following the famous Pennine Way, Wessenden Reservoir is a notable destination for local hikers traversing the southern end of Holme Moor. Continuing north of Wessenden Reservoir, hikers will arrive at Butterley Reservoir, close to Marsden.

West Nab Shooting Lodge offers clay shooting sessions guided by expert instructors. The Shooting Lodge offers ‘Have A Go’ days where absolute beginners learn how to safely handle a shotgun. Tea and coffee are available throughout the session, and patrons can enjoy a beer afterwards. West Nab Shooting Lodge’s coaching sessions are designed to prepare both novices and experienced shooters applying for a shooting licence. The Shooting Lodge also hosts corporate and private events, such as team-building days, stag/hen do’s, and birthdays.

Meltham: The Perfect Weekend Break

Meltham village has several popular eateries that will certainly make your stay memorable. For over 10 years, the Pink Elephant Restaurant has served a fusion of much-loved Indian and Bangladeshi flavours merged with Persian/Mogul cuisine. Situated at the edge of Meltham village, The Millhouse Bistro offers a relaxed space that champions quality ingredients and thoughtful cooking.

At the centre of Meltham village, visitors can find several cafés offering cheap yet wholesome bites. Liesl’s Kitchen is known for its friendly atmosphere and selection of homemade sandwiches and cakes. Liesl’s Kitchen opens early, making it a great spot for hikers to fuel up before ascending the hills. Gerry’s@Cafe 33 is an independently owned café that welcomes “muddy boots and paws”. Alongside its extensive menu – including gluten free options – Gerry’s also supplies locally sourced gifts.

For a merry evening, Meltham is home to several award-winning pints. The Fourth Fiend Taphouse is a popular choice among CAMRA enthusiasts seeking locally brewed beers. The Fourth Fiend Taphouse also promotes local businesses – their kitchen is frequented by pop-up street food vendors, and the pub walls are adorned with local artwork for sale.

Meltham village is a treasure trove of experiences, where its industrial past coalesces with modern amenities. Alongside its natural surroundings and highly rated attractions, Meltham’s B&B’s and hotels make it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway.
