Shelley, a small village on the edge of the Pennines overlooked by Emley Moor Mast (Arqiva Tower), is part of the Kirkburton local council ward. About 800ft above sea level, Shelley offers beautiful sweeping views of the valley it sits above and the surrounding countryside.
Shelley is now very much a commuter village, but with an active and well-run community association, Shelley has local community at its heart and retains the typical characteristics of a small and friendly Yorkshire village.

- Visit one of Shelley’s three local pubs – The Flying Ferret, The Rising Sun or Shelley Sports and Social Club.
- Check out the activities and events organised by the Shelley Community Association. Often held at Shelley Village Hall or Methodist Church Hall, clubs and groups include Shelley Over 60s, Shelley Art Group, Pierrot Players, Shelley Ukulele Band as well as Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides groups.
- Visit Pennine (Wyvale) Garden Centre and enjoy a meal or refreshments in the popular café that offers excellent views over the Pennines.
- Enjoy a delicious ice cream or homecooked meal at the Dearne Lea Traditional Farmhouse Tea Room and Ice Cream Parlour. Time it right and you can even watch the cows being milked!
Best things about living in Shelley
- The small patch of ancient woodland hidden within Shelly Park housing estate. A haven for resident dog walkers and full of wildlife. The bluebells are stunning in spring time.
